Vatican Falls
VATICAN FALLS is a fictional account based
on factual events.
Riccardo, late 20’s, is an Italian-American
singer/songwriter currently based in Rome. Seemingly
by chance, he meets Claudia, a Roman in her early
30's. They fall in love.
We soon learn neither is who they appear to be.
Claudia is a Vatican operative sent to spy on Riccardo.
He is a Catholic sex abuse survivor and a leader
of SCAR, a group of victims turned revolutionaries
who initially banded together to demand an apology
from the Vatican but have decided retribution for
the centuries of abuse is the only way to make any
impression. These strong-willed militants have taken
to murdering accused clergy as well as the destruction
of Catholic institutions.
The story is told in a deliberate flashback-and-forwards
manner with the love story central to it’s
core. The work deals rather explicitly with molestation
and, explosively, with where the blame lies.
The play is in English and Italian. Rome is a central
character in the piece. Songs play an important
part in VATICAN FALLS, as Riccardo and his co-conspirator,
Vi, perform original work—in character—commenting
on their inner world.
Ultimately, VATICAN FALLS is a love story where
our protagonists must choose between the causes
most dear to them and their love for one another.
VATICAN FALLS will world premiere later in 2007.
